Excuse my Neo-ism up there, but I got to school today, just in time for a big assemly for all senior students that had been planned. Now, most assemblies (sp, possibly) are a complete waste of time, but not this one. In fact, this was a very moving, profound speech given by a 45-year-old father who had lost his 18-year-old son ten months ago to drunk driving, and he retraced the steps of his life he went through before, during and after it happened, and spoke of how it affected everyone (including his little brother and sister) around their family, friends and community. Obviously, I can't do it justice here, but I was fighting back tears as it was occuring.
And as you might guess, it was a speech about drunk driving, or driving under the influence of drugs, et cetera. It was a big news story when it initially happened, since it was in this community, and five kids died from it. The odd part about it is that after it was over, people didn't say a word. In the halls and classes, people sort of exchanged knowing glances, but a lot of people were moved to tears and a lot of people were thinking, or were depressed, or sad, or whatever. I don't know. Just an odd moment.
