One of the new things they brought in to conserve IP addresses in http 1.1 is something called a host header. Thats where you tell the server what *server* you want, in addition to what file you want. So you can host a few hundred sites on a single IP.
The problem is that if a client doesn't send that host header, the server has no idea which page to give to you. So it has to guess. There is ways around it, but not easily.
